NEW LEBANON SHAKER OVAL BOXES
To produce an Shaker oval bentwood box, we carefully cut the cherry "swallowtails" by hand, immerse the sides in very hot water, and bend them around a wooden form. The sides are fastened with solid copper tacks. We repeat this process for the lid. Tops and bottoms are attached with wooden pegs. Shaker Workshops oval boxes are unique because we make them on reproductions of the original Shaker forms and templates.
The boxes shown here are made in select Pennsylvania cherry, then painted and lightly rubbed to look like a rare set made at the New Lebanon, New York Shaker community about 1830 - 1850. We use water-based, lead-free paints. Made in USA.
