| The Shakers had a wealth of aphorisms that helped form Shaker design sensibility. Nearly a century before Chicago architect Louis Sullivan announced that "form follows function," the Shakers declared that : |
"Regularity is beautiful" "Anything may, with strict propriety, be called perfect, which perfectly answers the purpose for which it was designed." "Beauty rests on utility." Simplicity "is without ostentation, parade, or any vain show, and naturally leads to plainness in all things." "There is great beauty in harmony." "All beauty that has no foundation in use, soon grows distasteful and needs continuous replacement with something new." |
