Alfred Shaker Museum
The Alfred Shaker Museum is housed in the 1875 former Shaker Carriage House building that was part of the Alfred Shaker Community. Located in Alfred, Maine this community was active from 1793-1931. The Christian Brothers of Instruction purchased the property in 1931 from the Shakers and are still in residence. The Shaker Museum is one of eight remaining Shaker buildings on Shaker Hill. There is also a beautifully maintained Shaker cemetery.
The Friends of the Alfred Shaker Museum, a grass roots group, is busily raising funds and providing volunteer labor. They are working to complete the interior of the building that will become a museum to display Shaker items, and include an all purpose function room to use as an educational facility and community center.
Mission Statement: Our mission is to historically restore, preserve, and maintain the building constructed as the Alfred Shaker Wood, Lumber Storage, and Carriage House and its surroundings for the purpose of establishing a museum in which to exhibit Shaker articles, offer educational opportunities, and collect and conserve Shaker material.
